February 24,
Dear parents and students,
Hope you all had an enjoyable mid-winter break!
I have scanned your self-introductions as a group and mailed them to China. You can go to the photo gallery to check them. I mailed the 1-6th grades’ self-introductions to Hangzhou Qiushi Elementary Schools Associated with Hangzhou University. (http://www.qsedu.com/Components/troduction.html?moduleid=2). I mailed the 7th and 8th grades’ self-introductions to Shandong Middle School Associated with Shandong University. (http://www.sdfz.edu.cn/wzzw_list.jsp?url.TreeTempUrl&wbtreeid=1019) . I hope we can hear back from them soon. The Chinese schools start their second semester on 2/25.
We have learned that Chinese New Year is a very important festival for Chinese people. The celebration lasts for 18 days. The last activity is the “Lantern Festival”-yuán xiāo jié -元宵节. There are several legends/stories about the 元宵节. You can google and read about them. It starts at the first full moon according to lunar calendar and lasts for three days. If you go out tomorrow (2/25) night you will enjoy a bright full moon. Traditionally, on these three nights, children go out with friends at night carrying lanterns for fun. For adults, the lantern contest and riddle solving contest are fun, too. The riddles are written on the lanterns. The Chinese people also eat 汤圆 -tāng yuán - to celebrate. It is made from sweet rice flour. You mix the flour with water to make the dough and then form it into balls. Some can be filled with different fillings. It is a symbol of reunion. See the picture in the upper left. Officially, 元宵节 ends the Chinese New Year celebration. After 元宵节, people have to go back to work hard for another year.
